Dian rapidly analyzed the system and found incremental improvements. For example, Dian suggested the integration of updated inertial measurement units, removing unnecessary components, and worked towards switching the communication protocol from I2C to SPI, which, in turn, resolved our sampling rate bottleneck. Dian also has a great ability to learn. When he arrived, our technology’s firmware was as simple as a setup and functions in a loop. We proposed the use of FreeRTOS to optimize the use of our device. Dian had never worked with FreeRTOS and saw it as a learning opportunity, creating the first FreeRTOS version of our device’s firmware.

I recruited Dian in a student-led team I co-founded and managed, called Cricket Rearing, Collection, and Transformation System (CRCTS), a finalist in the Deep Space Food Challenge organized by the Canadian Space Agency. Dian has showcased exceptional motivation and technical prowess as a key member of our team. He has played an important role as the embedded systems sub-team co-lead, achieving significant milestones throughout prototype and device building. He demonstrated strong expertise in PCB design, RTOS, and ESP32/Arduino systems. He efficiently designed PCBs, created a central server using Raspberry Pi connecting 40+ controllers, optimized performance with FreeRTOS, and integrated sensors successfully. I enthusiastically endorse Dian to anyone in search of such expertise!
